STUDIES - Szabolcs Anzelm Szuromi: Canon Law Handbook by Ivo of Chartres

96 SZABOLCS ANZELM SZUROMI Decretum at the end of the codex.13 Another significant copy is the BAV Vat. lat. 1358,14 which is a good example of a ‘colligatum’ twice and contains certain canons from Book 1 of Panormia, because the binder was not able to recognize the structure of the collection. Moreover, we can refer to the “arbor consanguinitatis” which regularly belongs to the material of the Decretum15 and is missing from the Panormia', but in some manuscripts we can find an empty folio for it, at other times, it contains this consanguinity tree,16 or it may be found there in two different places as well. There is a particular manuscript in Paris (Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Ms. lat. 3874) which does not contains the whole Book 10 of the Decretum, including the “arbor consanguinitatis”, and was also missing Book 17.'7 Based on these facts it seems that each of Ivo’s works were used in different fields. But the common material of the collections shows one central intention, which probably motivated the original author when he compiled his work. The Decretum and the Panormia listed many texts concerning the administering of the sacraments and the liturgy, and moreover, about various obligations of the clergy. If we take a glance at 9th century canonical discipline - especially in France - we can find therein the “cura animarum” as a most important duty for the parish priest. Châlon sur Saon (813) and Paris (845)18 are particular places 13 Foil. 129r-138r. 14 A Catalogue of Canon and Roman Law Manuscripts in the Vatican Library, 124-127.
