STUDIES - Szabolcs Anzelm Szuromi: Patristic Texts in the Collectio Canonum Anselmi Lucensis (Recension 'a') and their Correspondence with the Decretum Gratiani
78 SZABOLCS ANZELM SZUROMI contexts and extents in the Decretum Gratiani. The 156 [158] patristic canons of the recension ‘A’ of Anselm’s Collection sign the importance of the clear theological horizon in the Gregorian Age. The version V5 contains 112 [114] patristic canons and this number indicates clearly the very place and motive of the text development, i.e. the instruction in the cathedral school. If we compare the recension ‘A’ with the version V5 the most significant difference can be found in Book 9 (De sacramentis): twenty two more patristic canons are in this particular book of the recension ‘A’ than in the version V5 Perhaps it is interesting to repet this comparison with the material of the Decretum Gratiani. We can say generarly that this collection does not take patristic text from Book 8 (De lapsis) of Anselm’s Collection. Only two canons are there (D. 50 c. 35; D. 8 c. 9) which are not too convincing regarding their origin. The versions Fd and Sg do not contain these two canons. Moreover, the common material of Book 9 of Anselm’s Collection is also missing mainly from these witnesses of Gratian’s work. It is obvious that the material of the version Sg is less as the contents of version Fd,35 and it is manifest also concerning the patristic texts. Therefore, Fdquotes41 [42] patristic canons from Anselm’s Collection (more 16 [15] use different textform) and Sg quotes only 11 [ 12] (more 6 are in alter form). There are only two canons in edF and Sg from a patristic author which belong to the material of Anselm’s Collection (recension ‘A’) but those are not in the version Fd (cf. C. 32 q. 5 c. 9; C. 32 q. 5 c. 7).36 We mention also those thirty five canons which are in edF and Fd used by a patristic material of Anselm but these are not in the version Sg.37 The numerous patristic canons (cf. 72 [73]) which were very probable taken from Anselm’s Collection into the Decretum Gratiani could show not only the importance of that particular Gregorian collection, but it marks also the development of the instruction technique which had happened during the transformation of the cathedral teaching at the universities.38 35 Cf.
