The encysted larvae have a pseudosegmented body, bladder and tail. The scolex is armed with two rows of long hooks with relatively long blade and short base, 34-38 in number. The length of large hooks ranges from 0.266 to 0.314 mm and that of small hooks from 0.155 to 0.212 mm. On the basis of the morphology and dimensions of the hooks, the larvae were identified as those of Taenia retracta Linstow, 1803. This finding of T. rétracta in O. daurica represents a new intermediate host and geographic record. Key words: Ochotona daurica, Taenia rétracta larvae, Mongolia INTRODUCTION Before this study, ten species of intestinal helminths have been recorded in Daurian pika of Mongolia. Mészáros (1974) reported Cephaluris andrejevi Schulz, 1948; Dermatoxys schumakovitchi Schulz, 1948; Labiostomum vesicularis Gvozdev, 1956; and Danzan( 1976,1978a, b) found Diuterinotaenia spasskii Gvozdev, 1961; Schizorchis altaica Gvozdev, 1951 ; Ctenotaenia citelli Kirschenblatt, 1939; Physalopteriata citelliRudolphi, 1819; Heligmosomum mongolica Danzan, 1976; C. andrejevi; D. schumakovitchi; L. vesicular is; Trichurissp.; Graphidiellaolsoni Gvozdev, 1966. During the period 1984 through 1992, we studied the helminth fauna of Daurian pika. One O. daurica harbored strobilocercus-type larvae whose morphological features were distinct not only from those already reported in pikas, but also from other cestodes of same type larvae. The hook shape and length of these larvae closely resembled those of Taenia rétracta Linstow, 1803, a parasite of Vulpesferrilata, found in Tibet. The description of these larvae is presented in this paper.
