Sphaerirostris turdi (Yamaguti, 1939) Golvan, 1956 Specimen studied: Turdus pilaris - No 276 (one female), Hortobágy, February 1964. Description of female (Fig. 5.): Total length 8.60. Trunk fusiform, 8.0 long and 1.56 wide. Lateral vessels of lacunar system connected by transverse branches forming dense reticulum of irregular polygons. Proboscis 0.513 long, consisting of two parts separated by constriction: anterior part spherical, 0.319 long and 0.313 wide; posterior part truncate, 0.194 long and 0.363 wide at base; proboscis 0.263 wide at constriction. Proboscis armament consists of 26 longitudinal rows, 10-11 hooks in each row: 6 (7) on anterior part, most anterior 3 (4) of them longest, with roots directed posteriorly; in some rows, 4th hook has roots directed both anteriorly and posteriorly; remaining 4 (5) hooks located on the posterior part, spiniform, with rudimentary roots directed anteriorly. Dimensions of hooks (blade x root): I, 0.0425-0.045 x 0.055-0.0575; II, - x 0.0575; III, 0.0475-0.050 x 0.050-0.060; IV, 0.040 x 0.0275-0.040; V, 0.0375-0.0425 x 0.0275-0.0325; VI, 0.0375-0.040 x 0.030; VII, 0.040-0.0425 x 0.0325; VIII-X, 0.040-0.0425 x -. Neck very short, cylindrical, 0.075 long and 0.363 wide. Proboscis receptacle cylindrical, attached at proboscis constriction, 1.05 long and 0.21 wide. Lemnisci 1.20 long. Female genital tract 1.20 long. Trunk filled with oval egg balls. Eggs lacking. Genital pore slightly subterminal. Remarks: The available immature female specimen was determined as S. turdi on the basis of the proboscis armature, predominantly of the number and the morphology of the hooks on the anterior part of the proboscis similar to those in the descriptions of Yamaguti (1939) and Kugi (1988). This identification is, to some extent, conditional because a definite determination of this species should be based on mature specimens. This is the first record of 5. turdi in Hungary.
