RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The following acanthocephalans of the family Centrorhynchidae were found in the course of the present study: Centrorhynchus Lühe, 1911 Centrorhynchus aluconis (Müller, 1780) Lühe, 1911 Specimens studied: Strix aluco - No 2216 (4 whole males and 3 female metasomae), Szakonyfalu, April 1968; No 10071 (1 male metasoma and 3 whole females), Rácalmás, September 1983; Asio otus - No 1468 (1 whole male and 1 female metasoma), Pilisszentkereszt, May 1967. Description of male (Fig. 1): (based on the specimens from S. aluco, No 2216). Trunk almost cylindrical, filiform, 10.0-20.4 long, 0.60-0.68 wide at level of testes and 0.34-0.45 wide at constriction (before swelling); swelling of posterior part present, 0. 32-0.51 wide. Proboscis 0.720 long, consisting of two parts, separated by constriction at level of proboscis receptacle attachment. Anterior part of proboscis elongate-oval, with swelling just anterior to constriction of proboscis, 0.470 long and 0.363 wide. Posterior part of proboscis cylindrical, 0.250 long and 0.331 wide at base. Proboscis armament consists of 28 longitudinal rows, 15-16 hooks in each row; 8 (9) hooks on anterior part of proboscis, first 4 (3) hooks longest, with posteriorly directed roots swollen at base; next hook little, with reduced, directed posteriorly, root with bifurcated free end; transitional hooks 3, located on proboscis swelling, with roots consisting of two antero-lateral processes with shape of wings (frontal view), root and hook blade form opened "S" (lateral view); remaining 7-8 hooks spiniform, almost without roots. Dimensions of hooks (blade x root): 1, 0.045-0.055 x 0.0375; II, 0.060 x 0.0575-0.0625; III, 0.055-0.0575 x 0.065; IV, 0.035-0.050 x 0.0725; V, 0.035-0.040 x 0.025; VI-VIII, 0.040-0.0425 x 0.018-0.020; IX-XIV, 0.0375-0.040 x -; XV-XVI, 0.0375 x -. Neck very short, 0.0813 long and 0.356 wide. Proboscis receptacle, double-walled, cylindrical, attached at constriction of proboscis (at level of 8th hooks), 1.45-1.80 long and 0.17-0.23 wide. Lemnisci 2.0 long. Genital system occupying three-fourths of trunk. Testes elongate-oval, situated in tandem, slightly overlapping one another or at some distance from one another; anterior testis at 0.45-3.45 from proboscis receptacle; testes 0.45-1.08 long and 0.28-0.34 wide. Two to three cement glands; usually 1 or 2 of them begin more anteriorly, immediately or slightly behind posterior testis; 4.0-9.9 long. Ducts of cement glands 1.35-3.3 long. Genital bursa (invaginated in all specimens) 1.98-3.0 long. Description of female (based on specimens from S. aluco, No 10071). Total length 29.0-41.2. Trunk almost cylindrical, filiform, 28.32-40.35 long, with maximum width 0.72-0.84 (usually at anterior quarter of trunk); 0.48-0.54 wide at constriction situated near posterior end; typical swelling of posterior extremity present, 0.60-0.78 wide. Proboscis 0.85 long, consisting of two parts separated by slight constriction; anterior part oval-cylindrical, with swelling before constriction, 0.500 long and 0.356-0.406 wide; posterior part cylindrical, 0.350 long and 0.400 wide at base; 0.312-0.325 wide at constriction. Proboscis armament consists of 30 longitudinal rows, 16 (17) hooks in each
