DISCUSSION Three out of 30 guinea pigs inoculated intraperitoneally with T. equiperdum died of acute, and another three of chronic, trypanosomosis, showing lesions characteristic of dourine in horses. The 18 guinea pigs negative for trypanosomes by microbiological examination of the blood were killed at 2-3 and 8-12 weeks PI. By inoculation of mice, trypanosomes could be demonstrated from the spleen of only 8 out of these 18 guinea pigs. The guinea pigs that were killed would have probably survived the infection, as the 6 guinea pigs that died of trypanosomosis had consistently had positive blood tests and had gradually lost weight. The results indicate that the guinea pig is moderately resistant to T. equiperdum, as only 20 % of the inoculated guinea pigs died of subacute or chronic trypanosomosis. In contrast, all inoculated individuals of rodent species considered susceptible died of acute trypanosomosis. By experimental inoculation of the moderately resistant guinea pig with T. equiperdum we successfully reproduced the pathological entity corresponding to dourine in horses in the gross pathological, histopathological and, in one guinea pig in the blood of which trypanosomes were no longer present, protozoological sense. Our studies have shown that in the guinea pig, an animal species moderately resistant to the agent, T. equiperdum can be reliably maintained at least for 3 weeks. After that time some of the infected animals died; while the surviving ones became free from trypanosomes (as found e. g. for the 6 guinea pigs killed at 38 weeks PI). A szerzők 30 kifejlett tengerimalacot hasüregbe fertőztek 1-1.5 x 10 Trypanosoma equiperdum-xndX. A tengerimalacokban csak három hétig lehetett a trypanosomákat biztonsággal kimutatni, a továbbiakban az egyedi kimutatás lehetősége csökkent. A fertőzés utáni 5-6. héten 3 tengerimalac félheveny, a 20-22. héten 3 pedig idült trypanosomosisban elpusztult. Ez utóbbi 3-ban kialakult kórformák megfeleltek a tenyészbénaság kórképének. A vizsgálatok alapján a tengerimalac mérsékelten rezisztensnek látszik a T. equiperdum iránt és alkalmas kísérleti állat, hogy a tenyészbénaság idült kórképét egyesekben kísérletesen reprodukálhassuk.
