MATERIALS AND METHODS Test formulation The bait was prepared using LANIRAT concentrate, a preparation containing 0.25 % bromadiolone as active ingredient. LANIRAT concentrate is manufactured by LIPHA (France) and marketed in Europe by CIBA-GEIGY (Switzerland). The active ingredient content of the poisoned, ready-to-use bait was consistently 0.005 %. The poisoned baits were prepared and mixed in our laboratory and plant. The tested bait formulas contained corn or oat as carrier and were prepared without sugar or with different sugar concentrations. In each series of experiments 5, 10 or 20 conventional male and female albino rats (Rattus norvegicus alb.) of strain CFY were used. The rats were of the same body mass and age, and came from a stock bred by us. Each series of experiments included the same number of laboratory white mice (Mus musculus alb.) of strain LATI-0F/. The animals were maintained under controlled management and feeding conditions. Before the trials they were kept in plastic cages. The animals were given a standard, granulated rat food (LATI, Gödöllő) and drinking water ad libitum.
