Centenary of the birth of Professor S. Kotlán - Kassai, T. - Holló, F. - Parasit, hung., 20: 5- 10. 1987. ABSTRACT. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Sándor KOTLÁN (1887-1987) a two-day-long session was organized by the Hungarian Society of Parasitologists. This paper comprises the memorial speech of T. KASSAI and a report on the events of the session. KEY WORDS: Kotlán, S., biography, history The Hungarian Society of Parasitologists commemorated the 100th anniversary of the birth of its first president, S. KOTLÁN, in a scientific session held on 24th and 25th April, 1987 in Budapest. It was organized by the University of Veterinary Science (UVS), the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (HAS), the Hungarian Society of Parasitologists (HSP) and the Hungarian Veterinary Association (HVA) of the Hungarian Society of Agricultural Sciences (HSAS).These scientific bodies were represented in the presidium by Academician F. KOVÁCS, vice-chancellor of the UVS, Academician J. MÉSZÁROS, director of the Veterinary Medical Research Institute of the HAS, Professor T. KASSAI, president of the HSP, Professor L. VÁRNAGY, president of the HVA, together with Dr. I. MATSKÁSI, secretary general of the HSP, director general of the Hungarian Natural History Museum and Dr. A. GLOZIK, head of the Animal Health Division of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food. Besides numerous participants from different parts of the country, 11 parasitologists from abroad (Austria, Australia, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Federal Republic of Germany, The Netherlands, Poland, Switzerland, Yugoslavia) who were personally acquainted with Professor KOTLÁN or were his admirers participated and presented lectures. The personality of Sándor KOTLÁN was warmly recalled by F. KOVÁCS. After the vice-chancellor's address the S. KOTLÁN memorial speech was held by Professor T. KASSAI, head of the Department of General Zoology and Parasitology of the UVS, president of the HSP. In the following selected parts from the memorial speech will be presented.* S. KOTLÁN was born on 14th July, 1887 in Szomolány (now Smolenice, Czechoslovakia).Little is known about his childhood. He graduated from grammar school in Nagyszombat (now Trnava, Czechoslovakia). He vas also interested in archeology and botany, however, his future was influenced by his father who cured animals on the estate of Count PÁLFFY in Szomolány.
