from the gills under a stereo-micros cope. After examining the parasites alive, they were placed in glycerinated gelatin or ammonium picrate solution and fixed as a slide preparation under a cover slip. RESULTS The gills of all fish studied were parasitized by Dactylogyrus spp. D. extensus occurred most frequently (in all the 20 fish). D. achmerowi, D. anchoratus and D. vastator were found in 17, 4 and 2 fish, respectively. In addition to these already known species, in 16 out of 20 fish a parasite up to then unknown in Hungary was found. On the basis of its morphological characteristics (Figs 1 and 4/a) the parasite was identified as D. molnári, a species described by ERGENS and DULMA (1969). As regards the intensity of infection, D. molnári , similarly to D. achmerowi (Figs 2 and 4/b) occurring together with the former as mixed infection, exceeded D. extensus in the number of parasite specimens present. D. sahuensis (Figs 5 and 4/c) and D. minutus, species of differential diagnostic importance, were not found in the fish examined. DISCUSSION The appearance of D. molnári in Hungary means that another parasite has been added to the parasite fauna of the European common carp. Whereas the earlier described D. sahuensis , similarly to D. minutus , seems to be a rare parasite, it is expected that D. molnári will become widespread in a short time, as was the case with D. achmerowi. No data are available on the pathological significance of D. molnári. These worms, which have a body mass 1/1000 that of D. vastator and D. extensus , can probably be regarded as less pathogenic Dactylogyrus species, similarly to D. minutus and D. achmerowi.
