Differential diagnosis: The species Paranoplocephala mascomai sp.n. is the smallest known tapeworm of the genus Paranoplocephala Lühe, 1910 sensu Rausch, 1976. From the •species P. neotomae (Voge, 1946), P. sciur i (Rausch, 1947), P. ondatrae (Rausch, 1948), P. arctica (Rausch, 1950), and P. gracilis Tenora et Murai, 1980 it differs principally by the localisation of the testes. As far as the localisation of testes is concerned, the species P. mascomai is closely related to P. omphalodes (Hermann, 1783) and P. blanchardi (Moniez, 1891). It differs principally from these two by its body size and especially, by a very long vagina (though shorter than cirrus sac) having a mucinose and strongly muscular wall and by the receptaculum seminis having a well developed membrane (not thin-walled). Paranoplocephala mascomai sp. n. is the first helminth species exactly determined as a parasite of Microtus cabrerae (compare in ROCAMORA, MAS-COMA and IBANEZ, 1979).
