Before the publication of QUENTIN' s (1971) fundamental work - in which the structure of the anterior end and that of sexual organs received special attention - from M, arvalis almost all authors mentioned S. obvelata (Rud., 1802). QUENTIN was the first who showed that S. ob- velata is primarily the parasite of M. musculus, while S. nigeriana harbours M. arvalis. Further studies were conducted on more extensive material by SHARPILO (1973) and TENORA and MÉSZÁROS (1975). Regarding distributional data listed below, again, in most cases the actual and valid species name corresponding to S. obvelata of the original publications can not be stated with certainity . Here also, these are marked by a question-mark. Africa: QUENTIN (1971) Hylomyscus atella, Lemniscomys striatus, Mastomys sp. , Praomys jacksoni, P. morio, Stachorrjys longicaudatus, Gerbillus campestris;
