Three New Scutacarid Species (Acari : Tarsonemida) from the Nests of Small Mammals in the United States of America Dr. Sándor MAHUNKA Zoological Department of the Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest, Hungary "Three new scutacarid species (Acari: Tarsonemida) from the nests of small mammals in the United States of America". - Mahunka, S. - Parasit. Hung. 10. 129-134. 1977. ABSTRACT. Description is given of three new Scutacarid mite species; Imparipes (I.) spickai sp. n., Scutacarus missouriensis sp. n. and Scutacarus geomyi sp. n, , collected on, or in the nests of Geomys bursarius (Rodentia) in the USA. For some years now dr. Edwin J. SPICKA, Indiana State University, has been studying the parasite-phorete biocenoses on/in the nests of small mammals. He kindly sent me for study the mites belonging to the family Scutacaridae of his collection. For the material I wish to express my gratitude also at this place. The material consisted of three scutacarid mite species, all new to science. Imparipes (I. ) spickai sp. n. Measurements: Length 225 u, width 200 p. Habitus: Clypeus only slightly wider than any other segment, anteriorly more steeply, posteriorly more flatly, arcuate, otherwise nearly circular. Dorsal side (Fig. 1): Inner pair of clypeal hairs essentially shorter the outer pair, also more obtusely pointed. Hairs of segments D-F strongly incrassate, especially inner hairs, their distal half densely ciliate, outer hairs also thinner and shorter. Segment H with 3 pairs of setae, hairs h and h g of about equal length, hair only one third in length as the others. Ventral side (Fig. 2): Anterior sternal plate considerable smaller and narrower than posterior one. Hairs la longest of all in this region; hairs 2b slightly thickened. Anterior angles of posterior sternal plate very large, triangular. The lines connecting bases of hairs 3a-3b-3c form an approximately isosceles triangle. Hairs 4a originating anterior to hairs 4b, both pairs long, hairs 4a projecting beyond vulva, hairs 4b beyond posterior margin of body. Legs: Tibiotarsus of leg I. (Fig. 3) elongated, narrow, Chitinous peg of hair d also thin. Solenidia short.CJ^ considerably thicker than the others. Legs II and III (Fig. 4) without a modified (spiniform) hair. Hair dF of femur of leg IV (Fig, 5) extremely robust and long, hardly shorter than hair dT. Hair ld^ of tarsus minute. Material examined: Holotype (122-HT-76): USA, Illinois, Woodford Co. Minonh, 10 May 1973. On Geomys bursarius. Leg. E.J, SPICKA, deposited in the collection of Arachnoidea, Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest.
