The Occurrence of Cryptocotyle jejunum (Nicoll, 1907) (Trematodes) in the Dog in Hungary Dr. István MATSKÁSI Veterinary Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Budapest "The occurrence of Cryptocotyle jejunum (Nicoll, 1907)(Trematodes) in the dog in Hungary." - Matskási, I. - Parasit. Hung. 9_. 37-39. 1976. ABSTRACT. Eight specimens of C. jejunum (Nicoll, 1907) were found in the small intestine of a dog, originating from Tápiószentmárton (County Pest, Hungary). This species has not yet been reported from Hungary. The systematical problems and the origin of the infection are discussed. In the course of helminthological examination of dogs, originating from County Pest, 8 specimens of the trematode species Cryptocotyle jejunum , new for Hungary, were found. The occurrence of this species has been anticipated in EDELENYI's (1974) survey of the trematode fauna of Hungary. HETEROPHYIDAE Odhner, 1914 Cryptocotyle jejunum (Nicoll, 1907) - Figs. 1 and 2 Host: dog Localization: duodenum Locality: Tápió s zentmárton (County Pest) Measurements in ju: body length: 938-1287; greatest width: 529-532; oral sucker: 5670 X 47-64; pharynx: 36-39 x 33-36; acetabulum: 50-53 x 50-53; ovary: 131-148 x 81-86; receptaculum seminis: 70-89 x 61-109; testes: 224 x 168-196 and 224 x 112-140; egg: 22-36 x 14. Description: A small-sized fluke. Body narrowing to the oral sucker. Greatest width in the second third-part of the body excepting one specimen with maximal width in the first third of the body. Tegument is covered with spines forming rows. Oral sucker subterminal. Prepharynx short. Pharynx followed by long esophagus. Caeca terminating behind the testes. Acetabulum lying in the medial line of the body, near the bifurcation of the caecal branches, between the branches. Ovary situated on the right side of body, its caudal surface reaching the receptaculum seminis. Uterus with relatively few eggs situated between the oral testis and genital sucker. Eggs sharpened, with operculum, eggshell covered with fine spines. Large testes lying diagonal, caudally from receptaculum seminis. Vitellaria composed of numerous follicles, extending at both sides of the body, terminating behind the posterior testis, advancing anteriorad to the bifurcation. In most specimens follicles confluent at the level of the bifurcation. Large, bipartite vesicula seminalis located between the ovary and acetabulum. From the intestine of dogs two species of the genus Cryptocotyle , C. lingua Creplin (1825) and C. jejunum (Nicoll, 1907) have been described. On the basis of Nicoll' s original description C. jejunum differs from C. lingua in the shape of the body and in the size of the eggs. While the greatest width of the body of C. lingua is anterior to acetabulum, maximum width of C. jejunum is in the last third of the body. Egg sizes of C. lingua and C. jejunum are 48x22 ja and 31-36 x 16-19 u, respectively. Other features, such as the ratio of the measurements of the ovary and the receptaculum seminis, the site of the vitellaria, as well as of the testes and the ovary, cannot be used
