Ventral side (Fig. 6): Sternocoxal region with thin and simple hairs. Anterior sternal plate with hairs 2c much shorter (17 A) than inner hairs (45 ju-). Posterior sternal plate with none of the hairs, arising one behind the other in a longitudinal row. None of the hairs reaching the insertional point of the next one. Distance between individual members of setal pairs decreasing posteriorad: 3a-3a >3b-3b> 4a-4a>4b-4b. Legs: Claw of leg I (Fig, 7) excelling by its size even among those characteristic to the genus, Solenidia (fj and C( 2 equal in size, but LJ 2 much longer thanui. Genu with a fusiform hair. Femur of leg II with hair dF shorter than ld"F, but incrassate and densely ciliate (Fig, 9), Hair ld"G of genu also fusiform. Hair lv"T of tibia of leg IV (Fig, 8) densely ciliate. Material examined: Holotype : Indiana.La Grange Co., 1 mi. E Ontario, 14 May, 1973, Condylura cristata, leg. J. O. WHITAKER (8317), in: USNM. Remarks: The species is well characterizable by the hairs of the sternocoxal region and the hysterosoma. The chaetotaxy of the genu and femur of legs I and II distinguishes it from all known congeners. Pygmephorus hastatus Mahunka, 197 3 Localities: N.Am. 1; Parker Co., 5 mi, NE Rockville, 2 April, 1972. Scalopus aquaticus, leg. J. O. WHITAKER (7675); P?1as Ki, Co. J.P., 10 October, 1972, Tamias striatus, leg. J. O. WHITAKER (8086). Pygmephorus horridus Mahunka, 1973 Localities: Minnesota, St. Louis Co., Cubson, 9 September, 1971, Condylura cristata, leg. J. O. WHITAKER (7240); Alberta, Provincial Forest, 10 August, 1972, Sorex palustris, leg.: J. S. JONES (1300); Minnesota, 29 mi. SW Grand Rapids Mabel Lake, 15 August, 1972, Blarina brevicauda, leg. J. S. JONES (1367, 1369); Minnesota, St. Louis Co., 10 mi. NE Curson, 10 September, 1971, Clethrionomys gapperi, leg. J. O. WHITAKER (7254). Pygmephorus plurispinosus sp. n Measurements. - Length: 425 p., breadth: 230 ju». Dorsal side (Fig. 10): Surface with small but sharply defined foveolae, nearly punctate, Sensillus small, almost flabelliform, hairs in and ro very thin, hairs exo and most hysterosomatic hairs - excepting e 2 , f 2 and those of segment H - short (55 p.), thick, hair e 2 spiniform, approximately half as long as ej, hair f 2 minute. No essential difference in length concerning setae of segment H, hairs hj and h 2 closely adjacent, distance between individual members of hj agreeing with that between h-y and h 2 , hair 113 slightly thicker, removed twice as far. Ventral side (Fig. 11): Excepting hair lc, aU setae of sternocoxal region simple, hair 2c much shorter (24 p) than hairs 2b-2a (56 jx), but not thinner. Hair 4a just reaching insertion of hair 4b. Legs: Tibiotarsus of leg I with neither solenidia nor of equal length. Femur of leg II (Fig. 12) with both hairs dF and the slightly shorter ld"F incrassate, bearing 4-6 robust cilia. Femur of leg III (Fig. 14) with hair ld"F spiniform, short, smooth. Hair lv"T of leg IV (Fig. 13) short, with well discernible cilia. Material examined: Holotype: Washington, Olympic Nat. Forest, 18 July, 197 2, from Sorex trowbridgii, leg. G. S. JONES (1092), in: USNM. Remarks: Only two Pygmephorus species were known so far with a spiniform hair also on the femur of leg III (P. kumadai Sasa, 1961, and P. sicarius Mahunka, 1969) but that of P. sicarius is much longer on leg II, with also hair ld"F smooth and spiniform; in P. kumadai both hairs e 2 and f 2 are also spiniform and without an essential difference in length between them, nor is its hair lc bifurcate. x Unfortunately, I had no occasion to study SASA's type-specimens, it is therefore not precluded that I interpreted all characters correctly.
