Parasit. Hung. 6. 1973. Pygmephorus Species (Acari, Tarsonemida) from North American Small Mammals Dr. Sándor MAHUNKA Zoological Department of the Hungarian Natural Hißtory Museum, Budapest "Pygmephorus Species (Acari, Tarsonemida) from North American Small Mammals" - Mahunka, S.- Parasit. Hung. 6. 247-260. 1973. Pygmephorus mites obtained from 8 small mammals in Horth America were studied and described by the author. 5 of the identified 6 species proved to be new for the science. When collecting the external parasites of small mammals in the United States of America, but mainly in Indiana, Dr.J.O. WHITA— KER jr. had found some very interesting Pygmephorus species, which he sent to me for study. In the material originating from a total of eight small mammals, I recognized six species, of which five proved to be also new to science. The sixth species was identified as Pygmephorus spinosus Kramer, 1877, known hitherto from Europe and Mongolia. There were only some very small differences between the known exemplars and the specimens received from Amerika, which, with respect to the known great variability of the species, failed to seem sufficient for the establishment of a new specific t axon . The examined six species occurred on the following small mammals : Pygmephorus designatus sp . n.: Cryptotis parva (Say) Sylvilagus floridanus(J.A.Allen)
