SURJAN, M. - STVERTECZKY, Zs.: Serodiagnosis of Ech l 'IOCOCCUSContaminatioD During examination of 810 human blood-serum samples sent in for echinococcosis diagnosis the authors compared the haemagglutination (HA) and complement-fixâtion (CP) tests. Thirty samples were positive by both tests, 15 by CP test only, and 16 samples by HA test only. The HA test gave more positive results only when a basic dilution of 1:8 and not 1:20 was used. Contrary to reports in the literature, no aspecific reactions were noted at this dilution. The greater sensitivity and specificity of the HA test were striking when the tests were compared on-samples from pigs. Of serum samples from 20 known echinococcus-posit ive young pigs, 10 reacted with HA test but gave no reaction with CP test. All serum samples from 30 known echinococcus-infected pigs of 2-3 years of age gave a positive HA reaction but were negative in the CP test. The negativity of CP reactions in swine serum can be explained by the difference in CP activity from that of human serum and by the relatively young age of the pigs tested. The quality of cyst-fluids from pigs varied greatly and therefore for testing of human serum the use of human cyst-fluids is considered to be the most suitable; Irodalom ARABATZIS, G. - PAPAPANAGIOTOU, J. : Laboratory test in hydatid disease: a comparison of the indirect haemagglut ination , comp lement-fixâtion and intradermal tests. - Bull.
