Summary ANDRÁS MOLNÁR ’And I’ll live for my country’ The career of Lajos Kiss a court agent (1797-1869) Before 1848, official clients contacted the central state offices of the Hungarian Kingdom through so called agents. Clients had the agents urge their affairs to be completed, their complaints to be redressed, and licenses and privileges they applied for to be gained. Agents were lawyers who on behalf of the communities and individuals alike arranged their official and private business according to the rights they were authorized by them. Agents working in Vienna including religious agents of the Protestant church were called court agents. Current study based on expansive archival research and a systematic review describes the typical at the same time unique walk of life of Lajos Kis a Lutheran religious agent who acted as a court agent in the Reform Era in Vienna from 1833 to 1848. The study gives details of his activity in official, church, cultural and political issues, as well as moments of his private life. The position as a court agent gave him financial rewards and satisfaction as well as widespread social relations and honour. Due to his intermediary role, he had contact with the imperator court of Vienna and government circles as well as with the leaders of the Hungarian liberal opposition. Despite the fact that he did not reach a glorious career, his life as a whole gave him satisfaction. He helped the outstanding historical figures as an „ordinary state official”, he carried out an important fieldwork and served his country in a much useful way. 68
