Summary BÁLINT KULCSÁR Leader of the Reformed Community in Göcsej The life of the landed nobleman from Barabásszeg, Ferenc Bán There were several villages inhabited by noblemen in the region of Göcsej in Zala County in the era before 1848. One of them was Barabásszeg, which was the centre of a Reformed parish with its own church, pastor and school. In the local cemetery the tomb of a resident of the village from the 19th century, Ferenc Bán (1812-1875) still can be seen. Current study describes his life based on archival sources. Ferenc Bán came from an old family from Göcsej, he together with his brothers was one of the most outstanding smallholders of the village. Besides farming and stock breeding, occassion - ally he dealt with money lending as well. He had 16 children from his two marriages, only 5 out of all reached adulthood. Bán took an office in the local reformed community. He was one of the presbyters of the parish. He also supervised the works on the church and church tower in the 1840s. He was the leader of the local noble community in Barabásszeg in the 1840s, in the 1850s he became the judge of the village. As a landed nobleman, he took part in the public life of the county even before 1848, and he continued his participation later on. He supported one of the opposition parties after the Austrian-Hungarian Compromise of 1867, in 1872 however, he supported the governmental party. Due to his reputation and popularity, Calvinists in Göcsej accepted him as their leader. 195
