In his study he examines the case of a municipial election in Veszprém county by using election documents, records of family archive and specialist literature. The main character of the case is Péter Gál a wealthy lawyer and entrepreneur (1823-1903) with an intellectual family background who was elected three times (in 1861,1865 and 1869) in the Nagyvázsony electorate made up of 33 villages. Three candidates ran for the election in 1861 in the electorate with a majority of reformed Hungarian and a minority of catholic German residents: Gábor Pap a reformed vicar, Dénes Molnár a landowner and Péter Gál. The first election was held on 19th March 1861 but it had to be repeated due to the violence and other illegal actions of the voters of Gál (mainly of the residents of Szentgál where Gál’s father was a reformed vicar for the mostly noble landowner settlers). On the election of 6th April only Aladár Molnár and Péter Gál were nominated and Péter Gál overwhelmingly won. The current study shows that his victory was not due to the ethnic and religious ties and social status but to the personel connections involving friendly and family ties. Mentality (violence and corruption) had not changed since the years before 1848. 442 =-
