THE ISSUE OF CONSCIENCE AND THE FREEDOM OF RELIGION AS THEY ARE PUBLISHED IN THE PUBLICATIONS IN VESZPRÉM COUNTY BETWEEN 1817 AND 1841

The study examines the nearly a quarter century period from the 300th anniversary of the Reformation. In this period, the gap between the stately recognised and tolerated denominations widened, simultaneously the different ideas concerning the allience helped the improvement of the civil nation and the cultural integration. The author analyzing publications of religious journals, works, studies and polemical essays published by the local presses, performs how the relationship between the state and the church, and also between the different churches formed by the influence of the ideas of the Enlightenment. The changes can be interpreted as the intellectual dispute of the two centres: tha catholic episcopal see, Veszprém and the Protestant town, Pápa. The issue of evangelic-calvinist union and the catholic-protestant union also emerged in the disputes held at different levels of the autonomy of the churches. The dispute reached its highest peak in the judgement of chinch and civil law about mixed marriages. Finally, the Hungarian Parliament introduced the law of 1843/44. 3- which recognised the marriages made in front of Protestant priests and made it possible for the catholics to join a Protestant church by their free will.
