Summary ISTVÁN HERMANN JR. - ISTVÁN HERMANN SR. Contributions to the 17th century history of Pápa This publication is the first part of a longer study, which describes the ownership history and the demographical conditions in Pápa in the 17th century. Miklós Esterházy procured Pápa and the manor around it in the second part of the 1620s, which he later pledged to László Csáky in 1630. Csáky owned it until 1648 by fits and starts. After 1648, the Esterházy family took control over the town and the manor, and they also held the position of the commander of castle. By will of Miklós Esterházy, the town and the manor were inherited by his youngest son, Ferenc Esterházy, bom in 1640, which he took over only in 1660. Until this time, the manor was handled by his guardians. It was he who acquired the title noble residence for the castle in the 1670s. The assessment of taxes made in 1660 gives information of the inhabitans of the town, which includes the noble and the non-noble inhabitants and house owners. Beside the names of house owners, they indicated if they belonged to the Catholic denomination, and gave the number of house dwellers as well. Houses dwelled by Catholics amounted close to two-thirds of the houses in town, in this way they could estimate the number of houses owned by Protestants. According to different estimations, the number of inhabitants amounted to around 3000 inhabitants, but adding the number of troops garrisoned in town it could be minimum 3600-4000 inhabitants in 1660. » 62 «
