MŰHELY Acta Papensia XIV (2014) 3-4Summary ERNŐCSEKŐ Reelection of officials in village Garta between 1906 and 1911 The study based on archival sources deals with the election system and the social and power relations and conflicts of a village with a population of 1,500 lying in the county of Sopron in West-Hungary called Garta before World War 1. In the introductory part the author briefly describes how the laws regulated the right for election of the farm hands in the Austrian- Hungarian Monarchy. Following this, it describes and analises the local elections between 1906 and 1911. The local government consisted of six officials in Garta in 1906: one judge, four mayor’s counsellors (one of them is a vice judge), one public trustee. They controlled the village. Strategic decisions were made by the body of representatives, the implementation of which was carried out by the body of magistrates. A special feature of the society of Garta was that a significant part of the adult population was employed in construction works (37%), and except for a few of them they did not have any right to vote. Local power was exercised by the local farm hands, with always some conflicts among them. Women with right to vote were not allowed to take part in elections, authorized men voted for them. » 274 «
