The Free Labour-Tax of Sopron County to strengthen the Pápa Fonress in the Middle of the 16th Century (1622-16701

Parallel to the integration of the Pápa fortress into the Transdanubian system of fortresses , regulations to maintain and strengthen these fortresses were passed by the Diet (articles 1556:9, 1559:3). These articles commitioned Sopron County to supply and build the Pápa fortress with the help of free labour. The essay scrutinizes how this free labour (gratuitus labor) was regulated on the basis of an agreement between the Transdanubian orders and Habsburg king from the Sopron Diet in 1622 to the end of 1670. Researching the documents of the Sopron County general assembles, the author provides data concerning free labour taxation in Sopron County, the amount of tax and the settlements taxed. The period examined shows a permanent rescheduling of debts and an icreasement in the monetary redepmtion of arrears. A list of settlements in Sopron County from 1670 shows that free labour tax was mostly offered by settlements located in the western part of the county, while those in Rábaköz threatened by the Ottoman were not able to fully meet the requirements.
