SUMMARY BARNA GÁBOR Construction ot Historical Memory - Creation of Local Identity and Myth (The „Letter of Occupation’’ - Narrative on Resettlement of Kunszentmárton in the 18th Century] The paper analysis the so called „Letter of Occupation” a document of the resettlement of Kunszentmárton, an agrarian town on the Lowland (County Jász- Nagykun Szolnok). This historical source origins from the middle of the 18th century. The first half of the 18th century was the period of the resettlement of the middle and Southern part of the Hungarian Kingdom in general after the liberation war from the Turkish occupation. The „Letter of Occupation” is one of the most important source of this process on micro level. It shows the motivation for searching a new home and gives the description of its practical realisation. The period of search for a new home lasted for three years (1717-1719). The resettlement of Kunszentmárton itself happened in 1719 but it was registered only in 1762 after some decades according to the remembering of István Radies, the head and leader of the resettlement. He was regarded as an authentic source by contemporaries. The paper publishes the whole text of the „Letter of Occupation” as a thick description and analyses it as a folkloric narration and interprets it as confirmation of the power sctructure of the local community. On the other hand the „Letter of Occupation” is regarded as the construction of the local cultural memory. It shows characteristics of epic narratives first of all ones of legends, tales and memorates both in form and content. Acta Papensia II. (2002) 1-2. 159
