Days and memories — diaries and memoirs

This treatise was prepared for the 21 September, 2001 introduction of the volume comprising the memoirs of a barber of Veszprém, Károly Francsics (1804-1880) written during the years between 1827 and 1849. First, the author surveys the process how historians of various schools during the 19th and 20* centuries were related to diaries and memoirs as historical sources. Then he comes to the conclusion that the paradigm-shift in sociology took place in the second half of the 20* century, when compositions were no longer understood as the reflection of reality hut as a text, which shows how the composer of the text experienced and recorded past. It was during the zenith of his life when Francsics constructed his memoirs based his six-volumed diaries, that served the creation of his own individual identity. For the incessantly self-analyzing Francsics who lived a miserable life, it was the writing that provided him with spiritual freedom and independence.
