Seventeen thousand meters of historical source/Introduction of the main archives
in 1628. After that until 1872 - as long as the industry of the town was under the management of a guild - altogether 14 guilds were established; our archives keeps some kinds and all kinds of written documents of each union. The biggest in size is the archive of the furrier guild, its first surviving document having been written in 1730. In the collection of the documents of the guilds in Nagykőrös the earliest note is from 1662. In Vác there was a goldsmith operating from the 11 th century, and we have data of several medieval guilds. However, the archives of the Vác guilds remained only after the re-established organisations after the Ottoman occupation beginning from 1705. Amongst the archives of the 25-25 guilds operating once in the town the documents of joiners, carpenters, butchers, wheelers, blacksmiths and wheelwrights, stonecutters and masons, Hungarian and German tailors, slaughterers, millers, German shoe- and saddler-makers guilds can be found. The regulations ot the craft unions, the organisation records, the records of welcoming a new member in the union and other union documents are excellent sources for the researchers of the local society. The itinerant books constitute a separate collection. Alter the cessation of the guilds in 1872 the documents of the newly established industry associations make collected archive units. The objective of establishing the trade guilds in 1884 (1884: XVII. la), which operated until 1949 was to support craftsmen, to maintain the order and understanding between them, and to efficiently protect their interest. In the Pest County Archives we keep the documents of 30 trade guilds. Their size varies from a few centimetres to a few meters. Mainly personal and financial documents were preserved. From the documents of the pasturage and forest owner associations we created collections, but their length is not significant even together, each association has only a few centimetres of documents.
