PUBLISHING OF BOOKS IN HUNGARY DURING THE YEARS OF DEMOCRATIC CHANGES - STATISTICAL ANALYSIS P. SONNEVEND The structure, which was formed at the beginnning of the fifties, and which was based on he hegemony of state-owned publishing and printing houses has come to face definitive changes. The fast detrioration of financial conditions and the withdrawal of state from the financing of important cultural domains has brought Hungarian publishing to free-market conditions. Con- currently with that the annual announcement of minute publishing statistics came to an end - the chamber of publishers could no more undertake the publication of it. That is the very reason why the writer of this paper took the task to analyze the situation from various perspectives comparing it with past years and decades. The analysis was based on the statistical data gathered from the legal deposit copies in the National Széchényi Library. Between 1988 and 1992 the quantity of published books (titles) decreased by 10-20 per cent, and the composition of some 7-7.5-8 thousands volumes became the resultant of rather significant changes in proportions. The ratio of academic, popular scientific and the classic part of fiction diminished, and, again, according to the .value judgement' of the market, the percentage of light readings grew. That tendency is even more evident when considering the number of copies: the performance has reduced from the annual 110-120 millions to less than 90 millions with the highest ever proportion of light literature. For example, every sixth copy sold in 1992 was a light fiction from an American author. The closing part of the paper deals with the performance old printing houses, with the transition in the landscape of publishers (the decreasing performance of large ones etc.). 457
