The application of enzymes has technical possibilities which have been initiated by them with success. In the National Library for the last ten years lamination has been applied with polyethylene folie and Japanese tissue primarily for reinforcing groundwood paper. To eliminate the disadvantages of lamination the Library has adapted another method from restorers in the GDR. This method is "paper-splitting" and can be used for valuable papers too. Paper-splitting means that by a suitable technique the paper is split into two layers and a new thin, paper—which reinforces the original one—is stuck between two original papers. The surface of the reinforced paper maintains its original character and the increase in paper-strength is about thirty times more than in the case of lamination, as was established by a comparative test made in the library. Besides the experiments for developing the technique of paper-splitting, the method has been applied with success to reinforce an atlas from the 16th century. The sheets of the atlas were badly damaged by the corrosive effect of copper-green The photos following the article show the steps splitting these sheets. 203
