of which 23,000 has been sent to Hungarian libraries. The number of the duplicates received was 21,000. Besides, without receiving the books proper, re-distribution of the duplicates has been promoted by circulating the lists of duplicates only. 11,500 volumes have been preserved for the storage library whose construction is now under way. Research and Developing Activities. Automation With respect to the holdings the research and developing activities aimed, first of all, at the elaboration of the principles of acquisition and processing of the national collection on the one hand, and of the operational processes needed to meet modern requirements in the library's new building on the other. Mention must be made here of our Hungarica program realized primarily in bibliographical publications, of the theoretical work concerning standardization and regulation, and of the modernization of the operational processes in order to eliminate parallelisms. This latter is in close connection with the widening of the Hungarian National Bibliography system (e.g., integrated processing inside the library, utilization of the database of the Hungarian National Bibliography on magnetic tape, central cataloguing and card supply, CIP, etc.). Computerization of the current location index of foreign periodicals has been continued. The important achievement of the year was that we have sent an experimental magnetic tape about Hungarian periodicals to the international centre of ISDS and to its regional centre in Moscow for the first time. We succeeded in purchasing a terminal TS 51 which will be influential on future activities. In the field of historical studies we have to mention the fact that we have sent to press a scholarly monograph on the first period of our library between 1802 and 1867 written by Jenő Berlász. (To be published in 1981.) International relations Participation in International Information Systems In the frame of our cooperation with socialist countries we have been in close contact with the national libraries. The information and coordination of the committee of experts of acquisition have been carried out by our library in the period of 1979-1980 between the two conferences, with Mrs. Lidia Ferenczy as head. We have taken part in the two meetings of the committee of the acquisition of legal deposit copies. In the Berlin conference of the experts of union catalogues and interlibrary lending Mrs. Eva Kondor and Mrs. Aranka N. Rácz have read papers. In the frame of our scientific cooperation a study by Deputy Director General Zoltán Havasi entitled "The Peculiarities of the National Library in Socialist Society" has been published in the Moscow series "Librarianship and Bibliography Abroad" in 1980. In the Leipzig meeting of restorers in national libraries Miss Beatrix Kastaly has delivered a lecture. This year, too, we have participated in the activities of the International Scientific and Technical Information System. We have been particularly active in the IKARR-3 system and in standardizing. Mrs. Judit Szilvássy, Mrs. Jolán Fügedi, Mrs. Erzsébet Szűcs and Mr. Péter Sonnevend have taken part in them as experts. Our cooperation with Interinformkultura grew stronger. This year a bilateral agreement has been concluded with the Information Centre of Art and Culture of the Lenin Library about mutual data exhcange. We have delivered a lecture in the Budapest conference of the European Cultural Data Bank in 1980. In the theoretical and organizing work of the ISDS system Mrs. Judit Szilvássy acted as Vice President of the ISDS Board of Directors, and effective of April 1980 she was appointed President of the Board. This year we could not attend the annual IFLA conference. We have communicated with certain sections of the IFLA on the level of correspondence and data exchange. We have taken part in the conference of ISO, whereas our relations with AIBM have been reduced to RISM work. We have connections with IASA, IADA and SIBMAS. Our bibliographical experts have taken part in the UNESCO seminar on 74
