THE ACTIVITY OF THE NATIONAL SZÉCHÉNYI LIBRARY IN 1980 Acquisition In the year 1980 the holdings of our library have been increased by 24,234 volumes of books, 5,809 volumes of periodicals, 14,446 manuscripts and 72,026 other documents, i.e. altogether 116,515 library units. In accordance with our function as a national library we were continually making efforts to augment and complete our collection of national literature published in the country in Hungarian as well as in foreign languages together with other Hungarian or Hungary-related publications issued abroad, i.e. the socalled Hungarica literature. Besides, we purchased foreign literature, especially reference- and handbooks in certain fields of humanities (mainly linguistics, literary science and history) in accordance with our traditional profile. The rate of acquisition in legal deposit copies has displayed a slightly diminishing tendency as a result of the stricter selection regulations. In the international exchange of publications with capitalist countries the growing economoc difficulties have caused a little decline. Processing and Cataloguing Processing of books and periodicals has kept up with current acquisitions. Recataloguing of the periodicals' collection which began in 1976/77 has continued with considerable energy. Among the activities aiming at reconstructing the catalogues, which have recently begun, the reconstruction of the readers' alphabetical catalogue has been finished. At the same time we succeded in accelerating the reconstruction of the decimal catalogue. The processing of the special collections has been focused partly on current acquisitions and partly on the preparations of catalogue publications, e.g. the 16th century (socalled "antiqua") catalogue, the catalogue of Latin codices, etc. Several other special collections like the Music Section and the Theatre History Section have continued the activities reaching outside their own field, or the analytical processing and bibliographical registration of their holdings. Bibliographical activity •., In the frame of the Hungarian National Bibliography system the current bibliographies of books and music and the repertory of Hungarian periodicals have been regularly published. Current maps were registered in an appendix to the bibliography of books twice a year. The issues of the Hungarian National Bibliography, computerized since 1978, are photo composed from 1980: no. 18 onwards, so they meet with international requirements. From 1978 the number of the records in the database of the Hungarian National Bibliography amounts to 70,000. This year the 1977 issue of the cumulative edition of current periodicals was 71
