capacities cannot be increased considerably before moving in the new building. We tried to counterbalance this by using external binding capacities and by introducing new and modern techniques in restoration. In the frame of the holdings protective microfilming program, about 1.75 million pages of newspapers have been microfilmed. From documents of special collections 350,000 photos have been made. The number of the positive reading films handed over to Reference Service amounts to 1.6 million pages. This year the production of microfiche by the new assembly line was considerable : 30,000 pages were filmed. The level of reprographic services has been raised by introducing some new equipments. But the activity of the Department of Reprography is hindered by such objective difficulties like lack of further space. The capacity of the department cannot meet the requirements caused by the increase in number and quantity of the publications of the Library. Interlibrary (Central) Services The distribution of the legal deposit copies — on account of their ever increasing number — becomes a more and more difficult task. The proportion of the deposit copies in 1979 is 122 per cent as compared to 1977. 1.1 million of the 1.3 million copies were distributed to the major libraries of the country, the rest proved to be surplus. As a result of the activity of the ISBN and ISSN Office 95.9 per cent of the publications issued by publishing houses appeared with imprinted ISBN number. Periodicals with ISSN number amount to 6,000. 182,000 data were registered in the Union Catalogue of Foreign Books according to reports from 131 libraries. 95,000 cards were arranged in the catalogue. Information was given in 19,000 instances this year. 77,000 new data were registered in the Union Catalogue of Foreign Periodicals. Here in 12,000 instances was given information. Preprints were circulated for the preparation of the retrospective catalogue of foreign periodicals available in Hungarian libraries from the beginnings to 1960. This year we have re-formulated the profile of the Union Catalogue of Foreign Books and Periodicals in accordance with the internationally accepted definition of periodicals. Consequently, about 12,000 data have been transferred to the periodicals' catalogue. In the frame of the central registration of Hungarian libraries we made contact with network centres and began collecting data. Out of 22,000 loan requests from the country we had to forward about 11,500 abroad. Up to the end of the year 85.7 per cent of these requests were fulfilled. 55 per cent of the documents were sent in reprographic form. 83.5 per cent of the approximately 2,000 requests from abroad were fulfilled by our library. Meanwhile we strive to decentralize interlibrary lending for reasons of economy and speed. Our library tends to take over the tasks of a methodological centre. The consultative committee established in 1978 plays an important part in this. Certain changes in the possibilities of the International Exchange Service (e.g., their share in the legal deposit copies has diminished) and the afore mentioned economic aspects have resulted in the re-examination of our international exchange activities. This activity should serve, first of all, as a source of the acquisition of our library, and we have to reduce transit exchange in favour of other libraries the expenses of which are charged to our account. (Till now, only about 20 per cent of the material sent to us was kept in the National Széchényi Library's possession, the rest was distributed to other libraries.) At the same time, we wish to go on supporting both Hungarians living abroad and national groups living in Hungary with books in their mother tongue. This year 24,000 volumes of books were exported and 18,000 were imported by the Service. The Duplicates Centre has distributed 23,000 volumes to 119 libraries of the country. The number of the books received by the Centre was only 13,000 but it played an important intermediary role in the redistribution of the duplicates without having the books proper in hand. The number of the books deposited in the storage library amounted to 12,000. <S4
