Our problems and difficulties are caused by the notorious delay in completing the building of our new residence in the Buda Castle. Scattered and inappropriate situating of our different offices, frequent conveyance of the books between the various buildings are some of the factors which make functioning extraordinarily difficult. At present, different branches of the Széchényi Library can be found in 15 different places in Budapest with more than the half of its holdings in places other than the central building where, for instance, the reading rooms are situated. Acquisition In the year 1979 the holdings of the library has been increased by 24,859 volumes of books, 6,568 volumes of periodicals, 18,103 manuscripts and 74,906 other documents (music works, maps, small prints, microfilms, LP records), i.e. altogether by 124,436 items. (For a detailed analysis cf. figs. 1 — 2.) The new Acquisition Code has been introduced this year and its complements has begun to be elaborated. First, the document entitled "Directives on Hungarica Acquisition of Modern Book and Periodical Collections" has been issued. In the frame of our Hungarica Program, we continued the retrospective supply of missing documents for our Hungarica collection. This year, especially some research trips abroad proved successful in helping to acquire photocopies of Hungarica documents. Processing. Catalogues Current processing went parallel to acquisition. Processing of books and periodicals was improved by modernizing the course of work, by more exact typological approach to documents and by some other regulations. Regarding the fact that a new bibliographic standard is about to be introduced in Hungary in 1982, considerable theoretical preparation has been made as to the adjustment to the new system and as to the closing of the old catalogues. 50 of our colleagues have taken part in the training course to learn the new bibliographical system based on ISBD. It was an important theoretical activity to elaborate those organizational modifications the purpose of which was to eliminate processing in the Cataloguing Department parallel to that of the National Bibliography, i.e. to bring about the so-called integrated processing. Our experts have taken a considerable part in elaborating the new standards of processing in the frame of a project carried out by the National Standard Bureau. Special collections (MSS collection, departments of old books, music works, posters and small prints, maps, theatre documents) went on with their traditional processing work. The supplement to the printed catalogue of the Latin codices in the MS collection will presumably be ready in 1980. This year the cataloguing of the modern Latin MS volumes has begun. The result of this enormous work will be a printed catalogue in approximately 10 or 12 volumes. The Department of Old Books is preparing for press the catalogue of 16th century foreign publications. Of the processing activities of the Music Department mention must be made of the preparation of a catalogue of Hungarian music LP records which will be an important auxiliary for retrospective supply. (Our library began collecting music LP records systematically only at the beginning of the 1960s.) Bibliographical activity Current bibliographies of books, music works and articles in periodicals have been continuously published in the frame of the Hungarian National Bibliography System. (Maps issued in Hungary have been published twice in a supplement to the Bibliography of Books.) Books, series and newly founded periodicals published in Hungary have been treated completely in "Hungarian National Bibliography: Bibliography of Books" based on the UNIMARC system. As a result of the computerized processing introduced in 1978, the number of records stored in the data basis of the Hungarian National Bibliography is about 43,000, of which 15,000 are original works and 28,000 are analytical descriptions.
