THE ACTIVITY OF THE NATIONAL SZÉCHÉNYI LIBRARY IN 1978 Collections of the Library The growth of the library's holdings in 1978 was 114.403 units. Out of this there are 44.049 volumes of books, 5708 volumes of periodicals and newpapers, 13.388 MSS and 51.258 other types of units. So far as 25.321 units have been discarded from the fond of the library during the year (out of this amount there are appr. 25.000 small prints and duplicates), the real growth of the holdings was 89.082 units. On December 31st, 1978 the fond of the library was 5. 530.010 units. The project of a new instruction concerning the library's field of interest has been consulted by experts many times in the course of the year and the approved version will officially come to force at the beginning of 1979. The new instruction aims at a stricter choice esp. from among small prints, text-books, lecture notes and other ephemeral publications. The main trend in acquisition remained invariably the endeavour to make our holdings of "Hungarica" complete. In addition to collecting home publications they aimed as well at searching and acquiring "Hungarica" published abroad. The international exchange of publications was of great help in this work. In accordance with the library's traditional field of interest i.e. "the humanities" we made strict selections from foreign publications in the field of history and literary scholarship. The most reference works (handbooks, bibliographies, encyclopaedias) have also been acquired with special care. Our collection of incunabula has been enriched with four while that of our mediaeval codices with one more items. There have been accessions of MSS and correspondence of a great number of Hungarian writers to the Collection of Modern MSS. The bequest of Károly GOLDMARK (1830—1915), Hungarian composer, has been added to the fond of the Music Collection. Preparations have already begun on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth of the composer who spent most of his life in Vienna. Concerning the activity of the Processing Department the main concern was to diminish processing time and we have to state that considerable results have been achieved in this respect : processing time of a native publication that reached the library through the Department of Legal Deposits has been reduced to 6 weeks. After a transitional period that lasted for years, by the end of 1978, an exact tipology was worked out so that the definition of monographies, periodical publications and book-like periodical publications became possible on the basis of the most recent international standards. In this way, we could do away with parallel catalogue entries 82
