Making use of the cultural work-programmes laid down in the various bi-lateral state agreements we have maintained and improved our direct contacts with the fellow-institutions of the socialist countries. In 1975 we conluded two further agreements on increasing our cooperation with the Bibliotéka Narodowa, Warsaw, and with the Deutsche Staatsbibliothek, Berlin. The mutual visits with the neighbouring countries serve mainly bibliographic research into the common heritage (patriotica studies), while with the other socialist (the German Democratic Republic, the Soviet Union, Poland) their primary function is the exchange of experience. The field-trips and the longer scholarship-tours into the countries of Western Europe provided useful help for solving several tasks lying ahead of us, e.g. computerization. They also gave opportunities for conducting extensive and fruitful searches for hungarica materials. In memory of dr. István Gombocz, late head of our International Exchange Service, an active office-holder of the IFLA, who died in 1973, the School of Library Science at Kent State University (United States) founded a scholarship. It was first filled in the academic year 1974— 75 by a member of our staff. The growth of our international contacts is also testified by the fact that while in 1973 members of our staff made 37 official foreign visits, this number reached 65 in 1974 and 66 in 1975. For longer stay we received 30 foreign visitors in 1974, and 27 in 1975. 73
