To support the guidance in respect of library policy the Centre elaborated studies for the preparation of the new library law, participated in the investigation organized by the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party and dealing with the state of adult education, cooperated in the elaboration of proposals aiming at the development of workers' library supply, dealt with the relationship between schools and libraries. The Centre actively cooperated in the enforcement of the new supervisory statutory provision. It prepared the standards of public library service for publication; the supplement of this publication includes the IFLA standards, too. The Centre assisted the guiding activity of library maintainers by publishing statistical compilations, directories and information. Within the problems concerning some library types and readers' strata particular attention was paid to timely problems of county and city libraries. The elaboration of library models for middle-sized cities started. The draft dealing with the standards of college libraries was prepared. A one-year extension course was organized for librarians working in church libraries. In respect of young people's library supply the Centre dealt, first of all, with methodological problems of their connection with schools. To further library supply for national minorities the establishment of deposit libraries supplying larger areas were mainly urged on. Among the executed tasks in some fields of library work the following should be mentioned: participation in the national readers' movement; one-year extension course for librarians working in readers' service ; support and co-ordination of information work; elaboration of information systems in some subject fields; investigation of the national system of interlibrary loan ; support of cooperation in subject fields ; proposal prepared for a new order concerning the distribution of deposit copies; investigation of acquisition in public libraries; solving of methodological problems in respect of cataloguing and alphabetical catalogues; extension course for music librarians; preparing of a guide for local history researches; study of the problems in the fields of work organization and mechanization; preparation of national longrange plan for library buildings; planning programs for some library buildings. Within the scope of librarians' training the Centre runned the social science section of librarians' training course with altogether 280 students. Proposal was elaborated for the training of library assistants and in the preparation of curricula for college librarians' training. In the field of library science research the organizing role of the Centre increased. The studies received for the earlier invited competition were compiled in three collected volumes. The principle research trends are as follows: library pedagogy; literary taste open to improvement; structure of reading in public libraries; reception of some literary works connection between historical knowledge and historical reading; use of professional literature by pedagogues; pedagogical literature supply; methodology for the investigation of professional literature provision. Among the Centre's services the first to be mentioned is the advisory journal for acquisition called Új Könyvek (New Books). The brochure entitled Eseménynaptár (Calendar of Events) is edited in common with the Szabó Ervin Municipal Library. The 15 years index of the world literature journal Nagyvilág (Great World) as well as the discography prepared for music collections went to press. The Magyar Könyvtári Szakirodalom Bibliográfiája (Hungarian Library Literature), the abstracting journal Könyvtári és Dokumentációs Szakirodalom (Library and Documentation Literature) as well as Könyvtári Figyelő (Library Review) were published regularly. International relations of the Centre developed, too. The preparation of the socialist countries' conference for reading research started; an international comparative reading survey was initiated at the competent institutions of the Soviet Union, Bulgaria and Poland ; the Centre participated on the 5th Library Building Conference of socialist countries in Moscow; cooperated in IFLA work; in ISORID, sponsored by UNESCO, the task of a national centre is provided by the Centre; an English abstracting journal, covering the best of Hungarian library literature, the Hungarian Library and Information Science Abstracts has been published. 56
