Storage, preservation and reproduction At the end of the year the occupation of the stacks in the new building of the library could be started. As the library will remain in the present building still for several years, only the less frequently used material is placed on the shelves of the new building in Buda Castle. At first material kept on stacks far from the cential ones was transferred. In 1973 the whole operation dealing with the protection of the newspapers was at last placed on an up-to-date footing, with optimal technical conditions. The microfilming of the collection of Hungarian newspapers has been going on for several years under a long-term programme. This year more than 2.7 million newspaperpages have been filmed. Great efforts are being done for the conservation of the originals, too. The number of units newly bound was near 20 000. The duplicating workshop produces an increasing amount of publications, while also meeting the demands of the readers. II Inter-library (central) services The number of prints delivered to the Deposit Service further increased and exceeded one million pieces. Most of them were distributed among the rest of the Hungarian libraries. Attached to the Deposit Service a Hungarian ISBN office has been set up, and contact was established with the international ISBN centre. With the preparations completed, all the publications of the established publishing houses of Hungary will appear with the ISBN, starting with 1974. The Excess Copies Centre has forwarded about 40 000 library units to the libraries of Hungary. In accordance with its double functions, the International Exchange Service acquired about 20 000 documents from abroad, partly for the national library, partly for distribution among the other libraries. The Union Catalogue of Foreign Books registered about 150 000 new data, while giving 12 000 informations. 75 000 new data were entered in the Union Catalogue of Foreign Periodicals, which gave information in 13 000 cases. The list "Current Foreign Periodicals in the Libraries of Hungary" informed its users on the location of 15 000 titles of current periodicals. Based on the reports to the Union Catalogue of Foreign Books, the monthly current list of the foreign acquisitions of the Hungarian libraries continued to appear in two series (social sciences and natural sciences). The number of requests submitted to the Inter-Library Loan Service was about 24 000, of which 9,3 per cent came from abroad. 9 500 documents were received from abroad, half of which was in some form of reproduction. III Administration, organization, economic position, international relations During the year some changes were made in the organization of the Library. The new structure is a reflection of the double function of the national library: 1.) tasks connected with the holdings, 2.) inter-library (central) services. In order to strengthen the central direction and supervision of the institution another post of Deputy Director-General was created. The sum laid out in the national budget for the maintenance and functioning of the Library has proved sufficient. Our international relations were marked by increasingly closer cooperation with the various international organizations and information-systems. The Library took part in the International Scientific and Technological Information System of the CMEA (Comecon) in a number of fields, including periodicals registration service, theoretical researches, standardization. The data of the Hungarian periodicals were forwarded to the centre in Moscow for the common registration service of the CMEA countries in a machine-readable form. A draft standard for the CMEA membercountries for the introductions of identification numbers for books and periodicals was elaborated by the experts of our Library. The representatives of the Library attended the 1973 congresses of both IFLA and AIBM, also making an active contribution to the work of the various committees. 43
