EGSEDY When studying the foreign periodicals referred to in the publications of Hungarian linguistic and literary periodicals it was the measuring of citation frequency that proved to be the most suitable method. Namely, through counting the frequency of citations it was possible to determine the order of foreign periodicals yielding the information most important for Hungarian linguists and literary historians. The following step was to study the occurrence and availability of these prominent periodicals in Hungarian libraries. This method of investigation, just because it is measurable, makes it possible to show certain characteristics of periodical literature numerically. Such criteria are e.g. the obsolescence of literature, the distribution of citations to the different periodicals and the communication relations of periodicals published in different countries, etc. The requirement of selecting citations forming the basis of measuring is, on the one hand, that it should comprehend a well-defined time-span —so that the time factor could be exactly measured; and, on the other hand, that we should take articles coming from different periodicals at an equal rate. The selection of periodicals to be examined requires special consideration, for the character and profile of these are decisive as to the final result of the investigation. The range of periodicals to be studied can be outlined in the present case as follows: the literary and linguistic periodicals of scholarly character published in Hungary (indluding weekly, monthly, quarterly 340
