buyings, mainly on hungaricas. Special emphais was laid on filling up old gaps, mainly serials and periodicals published in Hungary. In the case of rarities and unique copies important for the Library we have started the production of facsimile copies made after the borrowed originals. Catalogues In the course of the reconstruction of the basic catalogues of the Library, the reconstruction of the alphabetical catalogue for staff use was nearly completed by the end of the year. In the readers' alphabetical catalogue the separation and special marking of the cards containing the works of the more prominent authors was finished. The most essential bibliographical data of such persons have been written on the guide cards. The reconstruction of the subject catalogue based on the Universal Decimal Classification proceeded more slowly; here the constant changes in the UDC created some difficulties. Cataloguing work at the various special collections had to be speeded up, as the large amount of the new acquisitions led to some backlogs in the work of processing. A comparative analysis of the International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD) and the Hungarian standard cataloguing rules was made, and it was forwarded to the Cataloguing Committee of the IFLA, too. Bibliographical ivork The current national bibliographies (Hungarian National Bibliography and Repertory of the Hungarian Periodicals) appeared regularly, although bibliographical registration can hardly keep pace with the increasing mass of publications. E.g. in the last two years the volume of the Repertory of the Hungarian Periodicals had to be doubled. The publication of the retrospective bibliographies is also under preparation. At present two periods are worked on: 1601 — 1635, and 1921 — 1944. On the basis of the yearly cumulated editions of the series 1961 — 1970 is also being prepared. In 1972 an index volume (printing presses and publication history) to Géza PETRIK'S Bibliography of Hungary, 1712 — 1860 appeared, covering its 18th century part. An important collection appeared in 1972: Title List and Basic Data of Newspapers and Periodicals in Hungarian Published Abroad, 1945 — 1970. Part 2. Non-socialist Countries, the work of Mária NÉMETH. The 1967/68 volume of the Bibliography of Hungarian Bibliographies also appeared. The review and registration of the works published abroad either in Hungarian, or related to Hungary in their contents is part of the system of the national bibliography. In 1972 two such current works were produced: Hungarica. Review of Foreign Periodicals (covering publications in foreign languages) and Repertory of Hungarian Periodicals Published Abroad. The bibliographical registration of the Hungarian books published in Rumania, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia was also started, at first covering the period 1961 — 1970. The work for bringing out a machine-produced national bibliography (adopting the MARC II system) is still in a preparatory stage. At present the elaboration of more exact standards and rules, which is necessary for mechanical processing, is in progress. Storage, preservation and reprography An improvement in the extremely serious storage stituation of the Library can be expected only after 1973, when the stacks of the new building in Buda Castle become available. Before that a large part of the holdings is kept in a number of stacks laying far from the main building, and the readers can use them only by ordering in advance. As to the protection and preservation of the holdings, there is an importan longterm programme for microfilming all the Hungarian periodical material. In 1972 more than two and a half million pages were photographed, and parallely with that positive 40
