the Union Catalogues added 134,000 cards of books to the registrations, while 142,000 new data were entered in the union catalogue of periodicals. The National List of Foreign Publications in Hungarian Libraries regularly published the title entries and locations of the new acquisitions of the Hungarian libraries in 24 numbers annually; the Inter-Library Loan Service handled more than 21,000 requests in 1971. III. Library direction, management and international relations There was an important organizational change in the Library in 1970 when the Division for Conservation and Reprography was established. In 1971 the former Collection of Periodicals was decentralized and divided according to functions. Several supra-departmental committees gave guidance and coordination in order to help specialist work in the Library. In 1970 the Hungarica Coordination Committee was set up under the direction of Dr. Gyula HABASZTHY, the Reference Library Committee headed by Dr. György PAJKOSSY and the Mechanisation Committee led by Sándor ÓVÁRI. Our international contacts showed considerable development during the period discussed. Library and scientific agreement were concluded with a number of socialist countries. The agreement of cooperation concluded in 1971 with the Lenin Library in Moscow is of special importance. One of the results of this closer collaboration was the Soviet-Hungarian library seminar held in Budapest in 1971. The exchange of microfilms with foreign countries showed a considerable upward trend, especially with the neighbouring countries. The number of study tours also increased : representatives of the Library made 30 official trips in 1970 and 24 in 1971. The most important international congresses were attended by Director General Dr. Magda JÓBORÚ, Deputy Director General Dr. Géza SEBESTYÉN, and Head of Department Dr. István GOMBOCZ. In 1970 and 1971 585 foreign researchers and 163 other interested persons visited the Library. Several hundred people were shown round the Library in groups. 75
