Report on the activity oj the National Széchényi Library in 1967 The year 1967 is an important period in the library's history and work, it is the beginning of the concluding phase of the preparatory works before moving to the Castle. Consequently attention was focussed on the so called „reconstruction" works preceding the change of home. The tasks in this connection were accompanied by others set by the superintending authority and to be performed by the library in the field of national library cause. One of the most notable of these is the fulfillment of the tasks of library concern in relation to the establishment of the national economy's informational system. In the course of the year the staff of the library carried out the following tasks : approx* one third of the bookstock has been revised, the arrangement of the duplicate copies stored a la rinfusa for a decade has been completed, the material prepared for the reference library to be set up in the new building of the library exceeds the quantity of 30 000 volumes. Due to our limited staff and financial conditions, some of our tasks had to be, however,. for a time postponed. Thus the building of the new library delays, the problems of the pretervation of the bookstock remain unsolved, there is a more and more imminent danger so the decay of the periodicals' stock and there was no change for the better in the technical backwardness of the library's equipments. Acquisitions The data of our bookstock and the acquisition are shown in tables 1. and 2. The acquisition of the library's stock was again determined by the tt national" character of the library, thus the copyright copies were the main source of acquisition. The decrease of acquisitions by purchase is due partly to the augmented bookprices partly to poor financial limits in purchase, lower than in the previous year. The acquisition was centred on the stock of the reference library to be set up in the new building. As a consequence expenditures of other character have been reduced and due to financial difficulties acquisitions projected by purchase could be effected only to a limited extent. The most notable event in the year was the recovery of the most valuable part (believed to have been lost) of the original bookstock of the Reguly Antal museum library in Zirc (3 codices, 63 incunabula, and 150 works from the Old Hungarian Library). Presumably these precious works had been hidden during the World War II. with the intention of preservation and they were discovered in the course of reconstruction works in the library. The agreements for microfilm-exchanges prove to be very effective as to the filling the gaps in our bookstock. The exchanges are effectuated in Hungary with the University Library, Szeged, and abroad with the Matica Srpska, Novi Sad, and Matica Slovenska, Martin. Catalogues, handling of books The data concerning handling of books are shown in table 3. As for the cataloguing,, the most significant facts are the clearing up of the matters of principle and the reconstruction of the catalogues. In the course of the year several analyzing investigations and rules of practical use were made and drawn up. The questions of principle and practice of the special collections in relation to the catalogue system of the whole library were treated by dr. GY. Haraszthy in a draft. The reorganization of the reference and readers' alphabetical catalogues and of the subject catalogue were going on without interruption. The reorganization of the analytical 50
