At the time of the elaboration of this plan emerged an other plan too. The contemporary Direction of cultural policy had in view the establishment of a basis of natural scientific researches and higher education on the waste area South of the University of Technics, on the right bank of the Danube. One of the central buildings of this central basis would have been the library palace housing not only the National Library but also the University Library. Mr. Nyireő prepared the plans for this "combine" too, yet they were not carried out in this case either. The author of the article points out the extraordinary importance of these plans even if they could not be realized, from the viewpoint of the development of European conceptions of library construction. These functional plans were drawn up at a time when there was a veritable vacuum of library construction in Europe, when all over the world the demand for aesthetics was prevailing in contrast to that for functionalism

. In the plans of Nyireő the clear expression of the new, modern European conceptions of library construction, having emerged only at a later date, is to be found. In his efforts he succeeded in uniting aesthetics with function and preceding several important a realized plans for library construction he gave shape to such conceptions as could even today fulfill the demand of the modern national library. 226
