Inter-library services The Copyright Deposit Service handled more than 1,600.000 items in these two years. About 20% went to the National Library's own collections, the rest was distributed among other Hungarian libraries or used for exchange purposes. The Service continued to extend its activity to printing-shops up till then net participating in the deposit service. The Union Catalogue of Books improved its functions, although a general reorganization-did not take place. In the two years about half a million entries were submitted by about 50 participating libraries. One of the most important achievements of the Library was the publication of the Central List of Foreign Books Acquired by Hungarian Libraries, of which two series were regularly issued every month as of 1962: the natural science and the soci­al science series. 87,720 items were listed with indication of the location. Another impor­tant publication, listing 13,000 foreign periodicals subscribed by to Hungarian libraries, which was first published in the period under review, was the List of Current Foreign Periodicals in Hungarian Libraries. The Hungarian Service of International Exchange forwarded about 30,000 books and 5,000 volumes of periodicals to 400 exchange partners of the Library, receiving approxima­tely the same volume of material from abroad. The incoming material was distributed among Hungarian libraries. The Service kept a nation-wide register on the exchanges conducted by 200 libraries and institutions in the country. The Inter-library Loan Service received about 30,000 requests in the two years, from which 90% were successfully settled. The Loan Service maintained excellent relations with the most important libraries in the field abroad. A new decree regarding inter-library loans was prepared. The Booh Distributing Division continued to distribute old books: in the two years abt. 250,000 volumes were given to Hungarian libraries; a certain part of these old books was also used for international exchanges. The volume of surplus material surrendered by the Hungarian Libraries to the Distributing Divi­sion had to be restricted, nevertheless 80,000 volumes were accepted. The Book Distributing Division was also responsible for supervising the storage places for used paper in the country. 36
