Hajdu, T.: Anthropological analysis of the Avar Age people from the Jászberény-Disznózug cemetery (Hungary)
148 T. Hajdú INTRODUCTION Seventy-seven graves of a Late Avar Age cemetery were excavated near Jászberény (Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok county, Hungary) in 2006. The senior archaeologist of the excavation was L. MADARAS. The unearthed graves covered only an uncertain sized part of the cemetery. The anthropological findings are curated in the Department of Anthropology, Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest. The Avar Age was perhaps the most frequently examined era of the Carpathian Basin in anthropological respect. It is partially due to the lots of excavated cemeteries from this period. The anthropological material of the region, where the examined cemetery was dug, is well-known from the previous anthropological literature (WENGER 1956^, 1956b, 1957, LEBZELTER 1957, LIPTÁK 1955, 1957, LIPTÁK & VARGA 1971). On the basis of the published data, several authors attempted to find analogies for the Avar Age population from the Danube-Tisza Interfluve (= Duna-Tisza köze) and the Great Hungarian Plain (BARTUCZ 1950, LIPTÁK 1959, 1983, WENGER 1972, ÉRY 1983, FARKAS & HUNYA 1984, FERENCZ 1991, FÓTHI 1988, FÓTHI & FÓTHI 1990). Despite all previous published papers this region and the whole Avar Age cannot be considered as a solved problem from anthropological point of view. MATERIAL AND METHOD The material of this examination is the anthropological findings from JászberényDisznózug Avar Age cemetery (anthropological material of 77 graves). The inventory numbers of examined individuals are from 2007.16.1. to 2007.16.77. in the collection of Department of Anthropology, Hungarian Natural History Museum. The morphological sex was determined by method of ERY et al. (1963). The age at death of the subadults were estimated according to SCHOUR & MASSLER (1941), STLOUKAL & HANÁKOVÁ (1978), BERNERT et al. (2007), and FEREMBACH et al. (1979). The age estimation of adults were carried out on the basis of I§CAN et al. (1984, 1985), TODD (1920), and MEINDL & LOVEJOY (1985). The skulls and the long bones were measured according to Martin's method (MARTIN & SALLER 1957). The estimation of stature was carried out by BERNERT'S (2005rf) software package on the basis of-SJOVOLD (1990) and BERNERT (2005b, 2008). The calculation of stature was based on the maximum lenght of humerus, radius, femur and the entire length of tibia. Annls hist.-nat. Mus. natn. hung. 101, 2009
