Keywords - Fish, Hungary, Hungarian Natural History Museum, catalogue. INTRODUCTION The former fish collection of the Hungarian Natural History Museum (MIHÁLYI 1954) was destroyed by fire in 1956. The present material derives from field collecting with the aim of making up for this loss, and donations. The last catalogue was compiled by BERINKEY (1972), in which 11,199 specimens of 80 species were listed. However, the collection was neglected for decades and was stored under inappropriate conditions. Unfortunately, this has led to serious deterioration and destruction of many specimens. In 2000 a scientific revision was started, along with re-preservation and cataloguing the specimens. At present, the collection consists of 12,286 specimens including exotic fish species. Of these, 10,862 specimens belong to the fish fauna of Hungary and the neighbouring Central (e.g. Austria), South (e.g. Italy) and East European (e.g. Romania) countries, which material is catalogued by a specimen register. Note that this paper is based on the revision of a corresponding database accomplished by 1 February 2007-
