Éry, K.: Anthropological studies on a Late Roman Period population at Tác-Margittelep

Hyperostosis A single case may hypothetically be classified within this category. In this 63-67 year old man (No. 189), bead-like outgrowths occurred along the edges of the os ischium and os pubis (Fig. 42). Possible kidney stone Possibly kidney stone with an amorphous surface was found among the bones of a 44-48 year old man (No. 261 : Fig. 38). Dental pathology The frequency of caries and intravital tooth loss was studied only in the case of individuals between 40 to 60 years who were deemed to provide a representative sample. Caries occurred on no more than 6 teeth of the 1203 specimens available for study from 65 men. This corresponds to a frequency of 0.5 %. The corresponding values calculated for the Pécs (ÉRY 1973) and Tokod (ÉRY 1981) Late Roman populations displayed caries in 2.5 % and 4.2 % of the cases. Among the 49 women under discussion here, 13 cases of caries were observed on 844 teeth corresponding to a frequency of 2.5 %. The corresponding values calculated for females in the Pécs and Tokod Late Roman populations were 5.4 and 8.9 % respectively. Intravital tooth loss occurred in 198 cases among the 1831 alveoli of 67 men resulting in a 10.8 % frequency in comparison with the 11.4 and 15 % values recorded at Pécs and Tokod. In the case of the 52 women available for study, 142 incidences of intravital tooth loss were found among the 1418 alveoli. The obtained 10 % frequency may be interpreted in the light of the 10.9 and 12 % values observed in the Pécs and Tokod populations. Developmental anomalies Phenomena attributable to developmental anomalies could be primarily observed on the dentition and postcranial skeleton of the population under discussion here. The presence of supernumeral teeth was recorded in the following cases. The alveolar cavity of an additional right 2nd permanent tooth was detected of a mature man (No. 178). The alveolar cavity of a supernumeral permanent tooth occurred
