Bálint, Zs. ; Johnson, K.: Taxonomic synopsis of the high Andean and Austral lycaenid genus Paralycaeides Nabokov, 1945 (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae, Polyommatini)
The senior author recorded four Paralycaeides taxa in a synoptic catalogue of the oreal Neotropical polyommatine lycaenids (BÁLINT 1993a: 22-24). Amongst them, Paralycaeides shade BÁLINT, 1993 was described therein along with two new combinations, Paralycaeides vapa and P. oreopola. It was suggested, however, that the latter two taxa were most probably synonyms (BÁLINT 1993a: 24). A lectotype was designated for Cupido vapa (BÁLINT 1993a: 23, fig. 59). Later, the results of the senior author were tabulated by BROWN (1993, Table 2) indicating the species number of the genus as four. In a short paper written on the taxonomy of high Andean polyommatine lycaenid butterflies, BALLETTO (1993) described the monotypic Boliviella (type species: Cupido vapa). BALLETTO's results were based mainly on the same historical BMNH material investigated by the senior author (BÁL)NT 1993a), causing some nomenclatorial confusion. Therefore, the senior author analysed the status of the names published by BALLETTO, particularly in regard to methodological and nomenclatorial questions, and showed Boliviella to be a synonym of Paralycaeides. The type species of Boliviella is actually the sister species of the type species of Paralycaeides (BÁLINT 1995). In the senior author's original paper P. oreopola was also properly synonymized with P. vapa (cf. BÁLINT 1993b). NOTES ON THE HISTORICAL STATUS OF ITYLOS INCONSPICUA DRAUDT, 1921 In spite of the sufficient description and figure of DRAUDT there has been some historical instability regarding this taxon. Most of the type specimens of taxa described by DRAUDT were formerly considered to be destroyed (KIRIAKOFF 1948). However, GERARDO LAMAS located several type specimens in the Senckenberg Museum (Frankfurt am Main, Germany) and in MNHM (JOHNSON 1991: 151), but the type of Itylos inconspicua was not found in Frankfurt (LAMAS, pers. comm. to the senior author). Very recently the senior author was informed that the original specimen of DRAUDT was successfully located and it will be selected as Lectotype in a paper prepared by LAMAS & ROBBINS (LAMAS, pers. comm.). NABOKOV (1945: 36-37) gave a detailed redescription of inconspicua as type species of his newly erected genus Paralycaeides. He also figured certain male genital structures (NABOKOV 1945: 59, PI 6, INC). However, only one male specimen was investigated by him, loaned from the AMNH (NABOKOV 1945: 1 and 36). We had the possibility to study this specimen (Figs 23-24) of "Itylos inconspicua" , labelled as: "prep. 607 [handwritten]; Cuzco, Peru, 3500 m, coll. FASSL [printed]; coll. W. P. COMSTOCK [printed].
