Makhan, D.: Nine new Hydrochus species from South and Central America (Coleoptera: Hydrophilidae)
Description (holotype male): Body elongate, length 2.7 mm, width 1.0 mm. Dorsal side shining. Colour very variable, some specimens are black, others are brown, elytra yellowish coppery with a blue-green metallic gloss. Head with coarse punctation, medial part of frons swollen. Pronotum almost trapeziform, surface coarsely punctate, lateral side with granules. Elytral length 1.8 mm, elytra widest at half of the way to apex, lateral side smooth, striai punctures coarse, wider than interstriae; tubercle absent, 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th interstriae carinate in almost whole length, apical holes absent, elytral apices rounded. Male genitalia (Fig. 9): Basal piece very long with short páraméra. Etymology: This species is named after my sister-in-law HANNIE JOHANNA PIETERSEN. This species is similar to H dewnaraini MAKHAN, 1992 from Suriname, in having the median part of the frons swollen. All known specimens of dewnaraini are females, therefore, the two species will be separated with certainty when males of dewnaraini will become available. Hydrochus zicsii sp. n. (Fig. 10) Holotype: male. Bolivia, Guayaramerin (Beni), outskirts of town, 22.XI.1966, Soil Zoological Exp. No. 391, lamping, BALOGH, MAHUNKA, ZICSI (female unknown). Description (holotype male): Body elongate, length 2.1 mm, width 1.0 mm. Dorsal side shining. Colour of head, pronotum, scutellum and elytra brown with a blue-green metallic gloss. Head with dense, fine punctation. Pronotum almost trapeziform, lateral sides straight, smooth. Elytral length 1.6 mm, elytra widest on posterior third, lateral side smooth, striai punctures slightly larger than interstriae, tubercle absent, 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th interstriae carinate in almost whole length, apical side with 6 small holes, elytral apices narrowly rounded. Male genitalia (Fig. 10): Basal piece shorter than páraméra, páraméra narrow, median lobe shorter than páraméra. Etymology: This species is named after ANDRÁS ZICSI, one of the participants of the Hungarian Soil Zoological Expeditions to South America. This species seems to be allied to H. baloghi but the shape of male genitalia is different. 5 6 7 8 9 io Figs 5-10: Male genitalia: 5 = Hydrochus otvosi sp. n., 6-H. naraini sp. n., 7 = Hydrochus baloghi sp. n., 8 = H. mahunkai sp. n., 9 = Hydrochus pietersenae sp. n., 10 = H. zicsii sp. n.
