rougher puncturation. Nevertheless, some specimens of these species are extremely similar externally, and only the investigation of the aedeagi provides a sure identification. The aedeagus of E. reitteri is small and slender, and the apex of median lobe shows on the dorsal surface a narrow relief apically rounded (Figs 10-12). E. reitteri is smaller than lapponicum on the average (1.6-2.4 mm vs. 2.3-3 mm). The specimens from Korea I examined, besides the size, are very variable in colour, mostly of pronotum, which is sometimes reddish yellow, and attributes a pattern similar to E. sibiricum, sometimes yellowish brown with lighter margin, sometimes entirely brown, like in the type; in the specimens with light pronotum, head is brown with a lighter area between the bases of antennae. Moreover, a longitudinal groove on pronotum, more or less wide and deep, is generally present. Sometimes other depressions that give an uneven look to pronotum are also present. According to WATANABE (in litt.) the specimens are "similar to E. kumona WATANABE in facies and colour, but differ from it in the following points: head and pronotum more coarsely punctured respectively; elytra more closely punctured, median lobe of male genital organ much more elongate". Eusphaierum prope reitteri (BERNHAUER, 1935) (Figs 8-9) Material examined - Korea, Ryanggang Prov., Mupo, Tuman-gang, 1000 m, No. 1363, 29.VI.1988, leg. O. MERKL et GY. SZÉL, 2 males (HNHM). Remarks - These specimens are similar to E. sibiricum (LUZE) and E. reitteri (paler form) in colour and general shape. They have reddish-yellow head and pronotum, yellowish elytra, blackish abdomen with reddish-yellow apex and blackish metasternum. The aedeagus is very similar to that of E. reitteri (Figs. 8-9), but the punctation of pronotum is denser and deeper. They may belong to a new species but the material is insufficient for description. Eusphaierum sp. n. ? Material examined - Korea, Ryanggang Prov., Mupo, Tuman-gang, 1000 m, No. 1363, 29.VI.1988, leg. O. MERKL et Gy. SZÉL, 1 male (HNHM). Remarks - This specimen is similar to E. sibiricum (LUZE) and to the abovementioned "prope reitteri", but pronotum is less transverse with more rounded posterior angles. Aedeagus is a bit different, with straight parameres and very narrow apical relief. It probably belongs to a new species, but the material is insufficient for description. Eusphaierum merkli sp. n. (Figs 13-14, 39-40) Material examined - Holotype, male and 59 paratypes, (31 males and 28 females), labelled: Korea, prov. Kanwon, Kum-gang san, Man-mul san, 30.V.1970, Hung. Zool. Exp. 1 in Korea, No. 66, leg. dr. S. MAHUNKA et dr. H. STEINMANN (holotype and 49 paratypes HNHM, 10 paratypes Z). I consider awkward to attribute all the new species here described to one of the classical subgenera of Eusphaierum that I consider polyphyletic (see ZANETTI 1987).
