Zanetti, A.: Contribution to the knowledge on Eastern Palaearctic Eusphalerum Kraatz with descriptions of new species (Coeloptera, Staphylinidae: Omaliinae)

LIST OF THE SPECIES The Eastern Palaearctic species of Eusphaierum discussed here, including the new ones, are quite difficult to distinguish. In most cases only the shape of the aedeagus is diagnostic. The female accessory sclerites are quite uniform, not much differentiated and therefore they will not be discussed in this paper. The collecting localities in Korea were transliterated quite differently in the labels of the twelve expeditions. They will be reported as in the original labels. A unified system has been published by VOJNITS & ZOMBOR1 (1979). Eusphaierum chinense (BERNHAUER, 1938) (Figs 1-2) Anthobium chinense BERNHAUER, 1938: 49. Material examined - Lectotype, male, Kansou O. Ma-ho chan, 16.VII.1918, LICENT (FMNHC); paralectotypus, female, idem 21.VI.1927 (FMNHC). Remarks - In the original description E. chinense is compared with E. minutum (FABRICIUS), from which it differs by paler colour, posterior angles of pronotum rounded, pronotum of males less convex, lack of projections at suturai angle of elytra in the females. It is also very similar to E. reitteri (BERNHAUER), from which it can be distinguished by the shape of the aedeagus (Figs 1-2), with wide median lobe dilated at apex, and parameres almost straight. Eusphaierum nigriventre (MOTSCHULSKY, 1860) (Figs 3-4, 33-34) Anthobium nigriventris MOTSCHULSKY, 1860: 544. Eusphaierum nigriventre: TÏCHOMIROVA 1973: 137. Material examined - Lectotype, male, (here designated) and 4 paralectotypes, labelled: Ochotsk / Anthobium nigriventris Sib. or. Ajan Motuk (?) (ZMMSU) (as the locality Ochotsk is reported on the first label and Ajan on the second one, it is impossible to establish the exact origin of the specimens); Sibiria Jeniss. territ. arctic. J. SAHLBERG, 1 specimen (NMW); Sibiria arct. J. SAHLB., 3 specimens (NMW); Fl. Lena Aldan B. POPPIUS, 1 specimen (NMW); Kantaika J. SAHLB., 1 specimen (NMW). Remarks - In the original description MOTSCHULSKY compares this species with the Western Palaearctic E. sorbi (GYLLENHAL), as follows: "Plus grand et plus allongé que notre Anth. sorbi, dont il a les colours, tête plus fortement imprimée, sur le front, corselet moins trasversale, élytres plus rugueuses, avec extrémité de la suture angueleuse et acuminée". This comparison is acceptable for the most part, but the colour pattern coincides only when viewed dorsally, as Euphalerum nigriventre has blackish metasternum, and E. sorbi yellowish. The shape of the suturai apex is not clearly different (Figs 33-34). The shape of the aedeagus is characterized by parameres with many hairs at apex, median lobe very narrow in the preapical portion, and internal sac with characteristic complexes of thorns (Figs 3-4). The geographical distribution reported by TICHOMIROWA (1973) should be revised on the basis of the study of genitalia.
