MAKHAN, Utrecht MAKHAN, D.: A new Haliplus from Suriname (Coleoptera: Haliplidae). - Annls hist-naL Mus. natn. hung. 1992, 84: 85-88. Abstract - Haliplus soekhnandanae sp. n. is described from District Nickerie, Suriname. With 5 figures. Haliplus soekhnandanae sp. n. (Figs 1-5) Description (holotype, male). - Body oval, widest before the middle of elytra, tapering backwards. Length 3.5 mm, width 1.8 mm. - Head yellow, with eyes prominent; frons finely punctate, diameter of punctures about equal to diameter of eye facets; punctures separated by 1-2 diameters; vertex nearly impunctate medially; antennae and palpi yellow. - Pronotum yellowish brown with a distinct anteromedial and an obsolete posteromedial spot darker brown; punctation much coarser than that of head, punctures separated by 1-2 diameters; the punctures in the dark spots are dark brown, in the lighter area testaceous. - Elytra widest in the first 1/3; yellowish brown, stippled with blackish brown pattern; surface with 10 regular rows of dark, coarse punctures; intervals with much finer punctures also arranged into rows; elytral margin finely crenulate in the first 1/3. - Legs yellowish brown, shiny, with long setae; femora and tibiae of hind legs slightly infuscate; metacoxal plates reaching to the anterior margin of the 5th sternite, coarsely punctate, without spine on hind edge. - Metasternal process with 4 depressions. - Male genitalia with penis and parameres as in Figs 2-4; left paramere with 4 setae, apex emarginate; right paramere with long setae. - Female unknown. Type material. - Holotype, male, labelled as follows: "Suriname, District Nickerie 4.8.1984 leg. D. Makhan"; "Haliplus soekhnandanae det. D. Makhan 1991"; "Holotype" [red]. It is deposited in the Coleoptera Collection of the Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest. Etymology. - This species is named after my mother SOEKHNANDAN. Remarks. - This new species is similar to Haliplus bachmanni VIDAL SARMIENTO et GROSSO, 1970 in having four depressions in the metasternal process but differs in having different colour pattern of elytra and different shape of the male genitalia. Haliplus soekhnandanae sp. n. is the first haliplid from Suriname. The holotype was collected in the north of Suriname (Fig. 5) in the shallow water of a ditch with abundant vegetation. * * * Acknowledgements - The author is indebted to Dr. OTTÓ MERKL, curator of the Coleoptera Collection of the Hungarian Natural History Museum for critical comments on the manuscript and to Mr. JÁNOS PÁL for preparing the habitus drawing.
